GHG footprint calculation methodology

Our CO2 emissions are calculated in line with the GHG Protocol Standards and Guidance 1, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) guidance 2, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) guideline.
This includes all emissions under Scope 1 and 2, as well as a subset of Scope 3 emissions.

Scope 1:Direct GHGs from our operational sites, such as

  • incineration onsite (high N2O)
  • wastewater treatment fugitive emissions
  • fossil fuel combustions (for operation equipment)
  • fuels used for vehicles (gasoline, diesel, LNG)

Scope 2:Indirect GHGs from the purchased electricity and steam.

Scope 3:Other indirect emissions across our value chain (upstream and downstream), such as,

  • city water
  • chemical
  • electricity
  • fuel (fossil fuel, biofuel and plastics)
  • waste disposal

We are including emissions from; waste generated in operations; upstream transportation and distribution; downstream transportation and distribution.
As emission factors - using the International Energy Agency (IEA) or local electricity provider.
All GHGs are expressed in a Carbon Dioxide equivalent value (CO2e), hence including the seven main GHGs covered by the Kyoto Protocol. Unless specified otherwise, all total GHGs are expressed in Gross tCO2e.
